The Band

One of the founding members of the band, Chalky (John) and has been playing guitar for over 50 years. Chalky first gigged in a folk group with his sister, touring around pubs in Devon – his home county. His favourite genre of music is the blues, especially the raw original music of the Deep South which can be heard through his style of playing. Chalky can also play slide guitar, mandolin and the banjo although none of these have featured in a Soul Provider set just yet!

Frank is at the heart of the rhythm section on bass guitar. Frank also began his musical career by playing and singing in folk bands during his teenage years. Later in life, he joined various jazz combos and R and B bands, where he met Steve (baritone) and joined the Soul Provider line up over 10 years ago. Frank loves to listen to and play 60’s soul, and his favourite song within the song list is ‘Unchain my Heart’ by Ray Charles.

Phil is the driving force of the band (mainly because he’s the one with the van!). He started on percussion from the age of 14 but has also played keys from being a toddler. Phil is super talented and musical but interestingly, can’t read a note of it! He joined the band in 2013 and also works as a sound engineer. He’s Phil Collins obsessed but loves playing the up-tempo ‘Don’t Set Me Free’ by Ray Charles.

Laura is the youngest of the line up on trumpet. She started playing cornet from the age of 7 and has grown up playing in brass bands within her local community. Making the move to trumpet, she began playing in a big band and joined Soul Provider in 2017. She is now also part of a Manchester based funk band and still teaches brass in her spare time. Listen out for her rendition of ‘Minnie the Moocher’ which is a band favourite!

IAN MILLAR | Trombone

Bio coming soon!

GINA HEYWOOD | Alto & Tenor Sax

Gina is the newest addition to Soul Provider and is now leading the saxophone section on Alto after having originally joining the band on Tenor. Gina started playing saxophone when she was 11 and throughout her life, has played in various funk, jazz, soul, disco and big bands around the UK. Her influences include sax gurus John Coltrane and Maceo Parker. Keep an ear out for Gina’s soulful solos throughout the set!

STEVE CHAPMAN | Baritone Sax

Steve is the bass end of the horns on baritone sax. He started playing Tenor sax around 25 years ago but in more recent years has moved on to baritone. Having played in other soul bands before Soul Provider, he’s no stranger to the genre but his first musical loves are jazz and funk. His favourite song to play with the band is ‘Shake’ by Otis Redding.

Gary is the frontman of the band and has been singing with Soul Provider since 2007. However, before joining the band, he honed his talent only in the car, shower and occasionally in the pub! His favourite song to perform within the set is ‘Hard to Handle’ by Otis Redding. He can also be spotted playing a range of percussion instruments from triangle to tambourine, and even the occasional guiro!

Carly is one half of our female vocalists and one of the original members of the band. Her voice is sweet and soulful but behind closed doors, her favourite genre of music is cheesy pop and 60’s / 70’s disco! Carly’s singing career began in high school as a choir girl and later in her teens she joined a girlband called ‘Sweet Triology’ before joining Soul Provider in 2003.

Gill is the powerhouse of the band and has been a key member of the Soul Provider line up since 2008. Before joining, Gill had previously sang in choirs and productions throughout school and ended up joining the band after being asked to cover a gig! Her favourite song to perform is ‘Son of a Preacher Man’ by Dusty Springfield but she loves anything and everything by The Commitments.
